Case Studies

We have helped a wide range of clients over the last 15 years and reasons as to the whys and wherefores of the loss of their data. To that end we have a broad knowledge of problems relating to data recovery as our case studies show.

Case Study 1:

Mac Air SSD Failure

Issue

Client had a Mac Air that has a laptop that would not switch on and all there is on screen is a black box on 3/4’s of screen. The Mac Air had a glass of water knocked over my accident and ever since this black screen is the only thing appearing on screen. Client took hard laptop to Apple Store and they replaced the hard drive and recommended ourselves to recover the data.

Our Solution

We received in the solid state hard drive from the Mac Air laptop and diagnosed that there was a problem with 2 of the memory modules. We removed the memory modules and read them in a harware chip reader to read the data from the memory modules. We could not do anything for the 2 damaged memory modules but there was a total of 12 memory chips on the SSD board so that would mean 1/6th of data would be missing. We then processed the data for client and recovered 82% of all data that was on drive.

* We have the hardware and the expertise to recover data from all makes and models of SSD Drives.

Case Study 2:

Synology DiskStation Failed Rebuild

Issue

Client had a Synology DiskStation which was in a 4 disk raid 5 configuration. The 3rd disk failed on the Synology DiskStation and had to be removed and replaced by client and a rebuild process was started. While the system was in the middle of rebuilding the Synology DiskStation, disk 2 in the Synology DiskStation decided to also fail. Client removed and replaced disk 2 and tried to start the rebuild process agin but it would not rebuild past 2%.

Our Solution

We got the Synology DiskStation in for recovery and diagnosed that all disks had severe sector problems. We imaged the 2 replacement disks and put all 4 original disks in an imaging machine to image all sectors from the disks. All sectors was imaged from disks and we then started the recompiling process of putting the raid data back together to try and recover as much data as possible. We extracted 99% of the data for client, 1% was missing due to the 2 failed rebuilds.

Case Study 3:

HP Proliant 3670 Server – SQL, Exchange & File Server Recovery

Issue

The HP Proliant 3670 Server has 7 disks connected to it. There was two volumes/partitions on the raid array, one was for operating system that had Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL installed, and the other volume/partition had all their user data on it. The company was one of the leading marketing company’s in the UK so the server held all their client data going back 9 years. Four disks failed on the server at the one time. Client does not know what happened but as it happened at the weekend so details are vague as no-one was onsite at the time of failure. Client got a HP Raid Engineer to look at server to try and get it up and running but the HP engineer said the system was beyond recovery.

Our Solution

We got in the server disks and imaged 3 working disks. The 4 disks that failed had electronic and firmware damage to them. We upgraded the firmware and electronics on the hard drive and then imaged the 4 damaged disks. We then processed the 4 damaged disks and now had 7 disk images to work with. We processed raid data and backed up data to a 3tb Seagate External Hard Drive. Client got the data recovered with 2 days.
